Nigeria Enters Space Age

Posted May 14, 2007 · Charles O

According to this article on BBC News, Nigeria is joining the league of nations (so to say) who own satellites, purchasing both the satellite and the launching service from the Chinese. Ostensibly,

Nigerian Communication Satellite NIGCOMSAT-1 is expected to offer broadcasting, telecommunications and broadband internet services for Africa.

BBC places the cost of “launching” the satellite at $311m; this cost does not appear to include the cost of the satellite itself.

Questions:

  1. What does this mean for Nigeria? Does it make sense for us to be spending $millions on space programs when the population still live, to use the cliché, in abject poverty?
  2. Purportedly, China is ramping up its purchase of African raw materials, and is in return, contributing to the infrastructural development of the region. Is this “growing economic co-operation between China and Africa” a good thing?

Please discuss.
